Budapest Museums

After enjoying Budapest’s most popular gardens and parks, visiting its churches and monuments, relaxing in its world-famous spas and spending an evening listening to an exquisite classical music concert, it is time to discover the city’s museums and art galleries. Some of which are extremely surprising:

Our three favorite museums

  • Museo de Bellas Artes Inaugurated by Franz Joseph I of Austria in 1906, the Museum of Fine Arts is one of the most visited museums in Budapest with over half a million visitors every year.
  • Holocaust Memorial Center The museum’s permanent collection is called “Deprivation of rights to Genocide”. The Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest commemorates the more than half a million Hungarian Jews killed during World War II.
  • Museo Nacional de Hungría The Hungarian National Museum houses, preserves and reflects Hungary’s most important collection of historical relics from prehistoric times to the present day.

Other interesting museums in Budapest

  • Museo de Artes Aplicadas The Museum of Applied Arts is located in a beautiful Hungarian Art Nouveau building that looks very much like a palace. It is remarkable both on the inside and outside.
  • Museo Etnográfico de Budapest The Museum of Ethnography in Budapest (Néprajzi Múzeum) depicts the traditional Hungarian life and is housed in a singular building.
  • Galería Nacional Húngara The Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest features Hungarian artwork from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, including a contemporary art collection. It is housed in the extraordinary Buda Castle.
  • Museo de Historia de Budapest The Budapest History Museum focuses on Budapest’s history from the Middle Ages to the present day. The basement ruins are astonishing and well worth visiting.
